Family Dentist

Children's Dentistry Wayzata MNInstilling Good Habits During Childhood

We encourage children to keep their teeth healthy with proper daily cleaning and food choices that are nutritious to prevent cavities and help them keep their natural teeth for a lifetime.

It's important for our young patients and their parents to understand that children's teeth are very susceptible to cavities during their childhood for many reasons. Eating produces acid in the mouth, and children tend to eat frequently throughout the day. This increases exposure to that acid, which can start the decay process. More often than not, kids don't brush properly. If teeth already have plaque build-up in certain areas, frequent exposure to more acid will both produce more cavities and increase the rate that each cavity develops.

In addition to daily brushing and flossing and consuming less cavity-causing food and drink, we recommend that your children and teens have one application of a dental sealant to their back teeth. It is quick, easy, and painless but greatly helps in the reduction of cavity development.

Dental Veneers Dentist

Cosmetic Dental Procedures Wayzata MNA New Smile in Only Two Visits!
Don't think that correcting your smile is a hopeless case because you have unsightly gaps, dark stains or discoloration, or badly shaped teeth. With porcelain veneers, all these problems can be easily corrected in only two visits. They can give you a smile that will look like you have had years of straightening. Veneers are very durable, thin sheets of the best dental ceramic. They are bonded to your natural teeth to give you that even, straight, and very attractive smile.

Veneers can also correct a chipped, cracked, or worn tooth. They are bonded to the natural tooth and easily conceal the damage. The veneer will be made to match the shade of your surrounding teeth, so they look very natural and function as well as real teeth.

We also offer Lumineers™. These are super thin and very translucent. Little to no tooth reduction is necessary and most of the time, a shot is not needed.

Dental Sealants Dentist

Dental Sealants Dentist Wayzata MN
An Easy Treatment to Prevent Child Tooth Decay
It is important to prevent tooth decay, as even the smallest cavity means permanent damage to a child's tooth that requires a filling. More advanced cavities will need a large filling or even a crown to preserve the tooth. Unfortunately, even diligent oral health care is sometimes not enough to keep the deep grooves of back teeth clean and clear of plaque and tartar.

Luckily, there is a solution to help prevent this build-up. Here is the easy treatment we recommend for all our young patients with permanent teeth:

The teeth are cleaned and sterilized. Our doctors will give one coat of a clear or white mineralizing dental sealant to each back tooth. To bond the sealant to tooth surface, the dentist applies a curing light. And that is the whole procedure, which takes only minutes! There are no shots, drilling, or pain. The teeth remain completely intact, and this has been proven to be a very effective treatment to help preserve their permanent teeth for a lifetime.

Sleep Apnea Dental Treatment

Sleep Apnea Dental Treatment Wayzata MNEasy Relief for Sleep Apnea
Have you been diagnosed with sleep apnea? If so, you may have been provided with a CPAP device by your doctor. This is a machine that pumps air into a person's nose and mouth through a mask they wear. Although it is successful in providing sleep without interrupting breathing or snoring, the mask is uncomfortable to wear throughout the night, so patients stop using it.

If you've found this solution to be intolerable, we have an alternative that may provide the results you need in comfort. We offer a custom-made acrylic device that is similar to a retainer. It works by gently realigning your tongue and jaw to keep your air passage open for continual breathing while you sleep. It is small and easy to insert or take out, simple to clean, and light to pack when traveling. Patients report an overwhelming 90% rate of success. If you have these problems when sleeping, please give us a call today so we can help.

Preventive Dentistry

The Number One Reason for Tooth Loss
The most common assumption for tooth loss is decay. But mostly, teeth are lost due to gum infection. Signs of this disease are gums that bleed while brushing or flossing and shifting or loose teeth. Sometimes there are no symptoms right up until the infection is in an advanced state. If you have already been diagnosed with this problem, you may be able to halt its progression with nonsurgical methods. If you wait until the infection has spread, surgery may be the only option.

Gum Disease Can Affect More than Just Your Teeth

Statistics provided by the American Dental Association have identified that 8 out of 10 Americans have gum disease. Dentists consider this high percentage to be at an epidemic level! With recent medical research, periodontal (gum) disease has been linked to serious health conditions of diabetes, stroke, and heart and lung problems. It is now a greater risk than just losing your teeth. The bacteria that infect the gums are circulated throughout the bloodstream, entering vital organs and having an effect on their condition.

The American Academy of Periodontology reports, "studies found periodontal infection may contribute to the development of heart disease, increase the risk of premature, underweight births, and pose a serious threat to people whose health is already compromised due to diabetes and respiratory diseases."

Easier Methods of Stopping Gum Disease
Gum surgery may be necessary if you wait too long to seek treatment. In milder cases, there are options of nonsurgical methods to halt the infection. Add better daily dental hygiene, and the gums will return to a healthy state. Both of these treatments are often covered by dental and some medical plans.

What Problems Result from Missing a Tooth?

Teeth are lost mostly from gum disease, but also from trauma and decay. Is it important to have all your teeth? Yes! Even one missing tooth can allow other teeth to start to move, which can cause more problems. Chewing is less effective at accessing nutrients in your food. When you speak, your clarity could be affected. Your cheeks and jaw may begin to look sunken, making you look older than you are. And weight gain often results from eating softer, easier-to-chew foods with a higher calorie content.

Dental implants can replace any missing teeth. They are natural looking and provide the ability to chew any type of food. You will be pleased to have a full smile again with relief from the problems associated with missing teeth.

Senior Dental Care

Dental Care Focusing on Seniors
It's not just our bodies that show signs of age, wear, and tear - our teeth start to change too. Years of consumption of food and drink can often stain, darken, or yellow teeth. Fillings may loosen or a tooth may crack. Bacteria accumulate in these minute openings, allowing tooth decay to start. Certain medications that seniors take may reduce the flow of saliva through the mouth. There are specific products that easily take care of this problem. Years of plaque build up on teeth, and when it forms below the gumline, gum or root infection will occur. If gums begin to bleed or teeth become loose, it is important to contact us immediately. We provide services that help you maintain good oral health, but we also encourage proper daily cleaning and good nutrition to keep your natural teeth.

Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry Wayzata MNWe Offer a Full Range of Sedation for Your Complete Relaxation
We are very aware of and understanding that dental appointments can be a worrisome experience for some patients. Needles, drilling, and other aspects of a procedure create anxieties that make visits challenging for these patients. At our practice, we make it easy for you to let go of your fears with conscious sedation dentistry. We are one of the few practices in the state to administer IV as well as oral sedation. For lighter sedation, we may use nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas.

Our doctors are certified in the use of IV sedation, which gives the highest level of sedation. It is a very controllable and accurate means of sedation that takes effect in the shortest amount of time. Most people do not remember any of the work performed, and an hour in the chair will seem like only minutes. IV stands for intravenous, which means it is given directly into the bloodstream. It is very safe and is also used for longer appointments requiring extensive treatments. It is a suitable option for those who are very fearful of any type of treatment.

If moderate sedation is right for you, we offer oral conscious sedation. You just take one pill one hour before your treatment and gradually reach a deeper level of sedation. Your level of consciousness lets you respond to questions asked by the doctor, but you will not be aware of the work being performed. After the procedure is complete, you will have someone drive you home. In an hour or so, you will be completely alert again.

Some people's fear centers around being knocked out. With conscious sedation, however, you retain a certain level of perception. You are not completely out as if for surgery. This sedation resolves the problems of feeling stressed, fearful, or uncomfortable during treatment, and lets you relax throughout your visit.

Orthodontics Wayzata MN

Invisalign Clear Dental Braces Dentist Wayzata MNOrthodontics that Are Nearly Invisible
Invisalign™ clear aligners are innovative technology that can straighten your teeth in less time than traditional braces, and do so discreetly because they are barely noticeable.

The Invisalign system uses 3-D computerized imaging to correct wide gaps, overbite, crossbite, underbite, or overcrowding, and can do so in only 9 - 15 months! With this technology, an entire treatment plan is designed, starting at the current position of your teeth through to their eventual straightened position. From the plan, multiple sets of aligners are created. They resemble teeth-whitening trays and are custom made for your teeth. You start with the first set and every two weeks or so, advance to the next set as your teeth are gently and gradually repositioned. Evaluation throughout active treatment is every 1 - 2 months. The length of treatment depends on your personal goals.

Straight Teeth Dentistry Wayzata MN - OrthodonticsBe Confident with Invisalign
There are advantages to choosing Invisalign orthodontics over other methods. Foremost, they are not noticeable unless someone looks extremely close at your teeth. Their clarity renders them nearly invisible. This keeps your confidence to maintain a complete and active life during treatment.

The aligners are very comfortable as they are just two pieces, one for the upper dental arch and one for the lower. They are not bonded to your teeth and do not have wires that need to be adjusted. There is no temporary irritation to your mouth and no headgear is necessary.

Convenience is another benefit. You wear them throughout the day and during sleep, but you can remove them for eating and daily dental hygiene. This also means that you can eat and drink whatever you like - absolutely no food restrictions! With no braces to get in the way of brushing and flossing, your teeth will remain free of plaque and be clean after treatment is completed.

Oral Hygiene Care Wayzata MN

Professional Cleanings are Important for Good Health
We emphasize to patients the importance of cleanings by our hygienist. Even meticulous brushing can miss some areas, allowing plaque to form on the surface of teeth and below the gumline. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar, which cannot be removed with daily brushing or flossing. A professional cleaning can take it off to reduce the occurrence of decay or gum disease. Recent research has proven a link between advanced stages of gum disease and life-threatening health conditions such as diabetes, stroke, and respiratory and heart ailments. Having a professional teeth cleaning contributes to your overall health!

Dental Implants Dentist

Beautiful Replacements for Any Number of Missing Teeth
Replacing missing teeth with dental implants recaptures a natural, healthy-looking smile. These come up through the gums and look as if you grew new teeth, unlike bridges or dentures that sit on top of the gums. Implants are durable and totally functional to regain your ability to chew and speak. They can replace a single missing tooth or as many as are needed. Even patients with no teeth can benefit, as implants provide stability when eating or speaking and remain in your mouth permanently. We handle the entire process from post placement to crown fabrication, so there is no reason to be referred to another practice.

Dental Crowns Dentist

A Permanent Crown in One Hour!

No longer do you need to make multiple trips to the dentist and wait weeks for a permanent crown to be placed. With CEREC™ technology, we can design, make, and place a perfectly fitting crown in about an hour!

This computer-aided system will allow our dentists to design a very accurate crown. CEREC then mills a durable, natural-looking crown in just minutes. No longer do you have to wait a week for a lab to make the crown. And there are no repeat visits to the dentist. It makes it easy and effortless for you!

The dentist first applies a reflective powder to prepare the tooth. With a special camera, a picture is taken that provides complete accuracy. While viewing the image on our computer screen, our dentist designs the crown that CEREC fabricates. It is bonded to the remaining surface of the tooth for a durable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing restoration.

What could possibly be easier than that?
